In a significant stride towards revolutionizing air transport, Joby Aviation, Inc., a US-based company specializing in electric air taxis, has applied to become the first certified air taxi operator in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The company made the announcement on Tuesday, highlighting its submission for an air operator certificate (AOC) with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

The AOC is a crucial requirement for any company that wishes to operate commercial air transport services in the UAE. The application was submitted during the inaugural Advanced Air Mobility Summit, organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada. Joby’s ambitious plans are set to usher in a new era of clean, fast, and efficient air transportation in the UAE.

A Partnership for the Future

Joby’s founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, personally submitted the application to Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA. The meeting marks a key milestone for both Joby and the UAE, with the country positioning itself as a global leader in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft operations.

As part of the five-stage certification process, Joby Aviation will develop air taxi operation manuals and undergo inspections of its UAE-based facilities. The GCAA will also evaluate the company’s pilot and aircraft mechanic training programs, as well as their flight operations. This rigorous process ensures that the air taxi services provided by Joby will adhere to the highest standards of safety and reliability.

The application in the UAE closely mirrors the steps Joby took to secure its US Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in May 2022. That certificate allowed Joby to operate commercial air taxi services in the United States, marking the company’s readiness to enter new markets globally, including the UAE.

Joby Aviation’s eVTOL Technology

Joby’s electric air taxis represent a revolutionary leap in sustainable transportation. The aircraft is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, traveling at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. This capability will drastically reduce travel times for short-distance routes. For instance, a journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, which typically takes about 45 minutes by car, can be completed in just 10 minutes with Joby’s air taxi.

This time-saving advantage is just one of the many benefits of Joby’s air taxi service. The company’s aircraft is also quieter and produces zero emissions, making it a key player in the global push toward clean and green transportation solutions.

A Vision for Electric Air Taxi Networks

“JoeBen Bevirt highlighted the growing excitement around clean air travel in the UAE, saying, “The shift towards cleaner flights is really gaining speed across the country. We’re thrilled to collaborate with various partners, including the GCAA, as we work to establish one of the world’s first electric air taxi networks. – delivering fast, clean, and quiet journeys.”

This is not Joby’s first step towards establishing air taxi services in the UAE. Earlier this year, in February, the company signed a definitive agreement with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch air taxi services in the city. The agreement highlighted Dubai’s commitment to integrating advanced air mobility solutions into its urban infrastructure.

In April, Joby further strengthened its ties with the UAE by signing a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi, the Department of Economic Development (DED), and the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) in Abu Dhabi. This collaboration aims to bring air taxi services to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, creating a seamless network of electric air transport across the country.

UAE’s Commitment to Advanced Air Mobility

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, emphasized the significance of Joby’s application in advancing the UAE’s air mobility goals. “Al Suwaidi expressed that Joby Aviation’s application for an operator certificate is a key step in the UAE’s path to becoming a global leader in eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) operations. He added, “Our commitment to supporting these innovative technologies highlights our dedication to developing advanced air mobility solutions, which will play a crucial role in the future of transportation both in the UAE and internationally.

The UAE’s leadership in adopting cutting-edge technologies is evident in its active role in promoting electric and autonomous transport systems. Joby’s electric air taxis align perfectly with the UAE’s vision of sustainable urban mobility, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions, enhancing connectivity, and improving the overall efficiency of transportation.

The Future of Air Taxis in the UAE

Looking ahead, Joby Aviation is expected to complete the certification process within the coming months, paving the way for the first commercial air taxi operations in the UAE. Joby’s electric air taxis are projected to become a key component of the UAE’s transport ecosystem, offering both residents and tourists a faster and cleaner alternative to traditional transportation methods.

Meanwhile, another US-based air taxi company, Archer Aviation, is also making waves in the industry. Archer has conducted more than 400 test flights of its air taxi, “Midnight,” and is preparing to launch commercial operations next year. The company has exceeded its testing targets by completing 402 test flights in just eight months, ahead of its 2024 launch schedule.

Conclusion

As Joby Aviation moves forward with its air operator certificate application, the UAE is on the verge of becoming a global hub for electric air taxi services. Joby’s electric air taxis promise to deliver fast, quiet, and environmentally friendly transportation, aligning perfectly with the UAE’s goals for sustainable urban development. With the support of the GCAA and partnerships with key stakeholders, the future of air mobility in the UAE looks incredibly promising.

With electric air taxis like Joby’s ready to take flight, the way people travel in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi may soon be transformed, offering a glimpse into the future of urban transportation.
